Artistic expression is artistic expression. If you start making music thinking of where it will or it will not fit as far as genre goes, thinking that you will lose fans or industry connections if you release something different than what they are already expecting because you're part of a specific "scene", then you're already limiting the possibilities of real artistic expression. Make what you want to make and however you want to make it, release it, and let people decide on their own if they like it or not.
